We believe the best way to grow in your faith is to practice it. Practice is not a performance; it is a daily decision to pursue God, one step at a time. On this page, you'll find helpful information on fasting + prayer.
As a church, we engage in a corporate fast from sunup to sundown each Wednesday. Let's join together as we follow Jesus in the practices He instructs us to follow!
- Fast. There are several types of fasts, please pray about which would be appropriate for you. Please be aware of your medical limitations and proceed with wisdom. Below you'll find descriptions of different ways to participate in fasting.
- Pray. During regular times you'd be eating; instead, spend time praying. Use the "I'm kinda hungry" thoughts to prompt you to engage in prayer.
Prayer
If you ever get to a place in your life where you feel like something is missing, it’s probably a connection problem: you are disconnected from God and too connected to the world. Prayer and fasting can have a powerful impact on setting your life back on track.
Prayer connects us to God.
The more time you spend with something or someone, the more confidence you build in it. The same is true for God. The more time you spend with God, the more your faith in Him will grow. Prayer is both talking and listening.
Remember, praying is simply talking, listening, and giving your attention to being with God. You can pray the Lord's prayer or make a list of requests to pray over. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your prayer, or utilize a prayer app like Lectio 365 to help you pray selections of Scripture.
We dedicate the first Wednesday evening of every month to prayer and worship together. Grab your Bible, a journal, and make plans to attend next month!
Fasting
Fasting is one of the least known disciplines in the church, but it is a practice mentioned both in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible and by Jesus Himself, and it impacts our lives today.
Fasting disconnects us from the world.
Fasting isn’t about punishing yourself because God wants you to suffer; rather, it’s about intentionally disconnecting from worldly things so you can hear from God and experience the full life He has for you.
The goal of fasting is to draw nearer to God. Biblical fasting always has to do with eliminating distractions for a spiritual purpose; it hits the reset button of our soul and renews us from the inside out. It also enables us to celebrate the goodness and mercy of God and prepares our hearts for all the good things God desires to bring into our lives.
Types of Fasting
We realize that for some, a complete fast may not be the best option. Your personal fast should present a level of challenge, but it is very important to know your body, and your options, and most importantly, to seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do, adhering to wise counsel from doctors.
COMPLETE FAST
In this fast, you drink only liquids, typically water, with light juices as an option. Usually is done in a 24-hour period or several consecutive days.
ALL DAY FAST
This involves abstaining from eating any food during the day. This can correlate to specific times of the day, such as 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, or from sunup to sundown.
LIQUID ONLY
Choosing to only have liquids over a set period of time, is another type of fasting. Remember, fasting means, choosing to not partake of food. A liquid-only fast can help add needed nutrients to your body while allowing you to fast over several days in a row.
SOUL DETOX
Refraining from common habits is another option if you do not have much experience fasting food, have health issues that prevent you from fasting food, or if you wish to refocus certain areas of your life that are out of balance. For example, you might choose to stop using social media or watching television for the duration of the fast and then carefully bring that element back into your life in healthy doses at the conclusion of the fast.
SELECTIVE FAST
This type of fast involves removing certain elements from your diet. This can feel more like a diet or intermittent fasting, so choosing this type of spiritual fasting will require you to focus on prayer. The most common selective fast is the Daniel Fast.
DANIEL FAST
The Daniel Fast is when you remove meat, sweets, and bread from your diet and consume water and juice for fluids and fruits and vegetables for food.
SINGLE MEAL FAST
This fast is not eating for one meal out of the day for the express purpose of communing with the Father in prayer. This can be done daily or weekly for a longer time period.
